  • It's grape harvest time on Lake Garda

Summer is nearly over and autumn is about to come and like every year on Lake Garda it's time for grape harvest, the most crucial step in the process of wine making. In particular, in the last days in Valtenesi, wine area on the western shores of Lake Garda between Desenzano and Gardone Riviera, has begun the grape harvest of Doc Groppello, Marzemino, Barbera and Sangiovese grapes that are used to produce Chiaretto and in the second half of September will follow the selection of red wines. Despite of hot temperatures during summer 2017, the grape harvest has started 10 days in advance if compared with the last year, but only 3 days than 2015.

Moreover, the temperature drop and the rainy days of the last 10 days have contributed to balance the year. Experts are expecting a decrease in production of 20% due to frost on 19th April. The vegetative growth during summer has been regular thanks to the balance between warm and rainy days that have contributed to the growth of vines with a reduction of pesticide prevention practises. Grapes are in perfect conditions and with a good aroma and high sugar content that is expected to be higher than the last grape harvests. So, we can be sure that the wine production will be very interesting.

Selva Capuzza, the renowned winery in San Martino della Battaglia, has won the 47th edition of Palio del Groppello. The verdict of the last days has been decided by the Confraternita del Groppello. 20 wineries have participated to the competition and a jury composed by oenologists and sommeliers have chosen 3 wineries as finalists: Capuzza, Sergio Delai in Puegnago del Garda (winner in 2016) and Le Gaine in Bedizzole.
