• Weekend on Lake Garda at the discovery of citrus fruits

Thanks to its unique, Mediterranean influenced microclimate, Lake Garda is historically known for its production of oranges and lemons and to this ancient culture, documented since the fifteenth century, Gargnano is dedicating the event "Giardini d’Agrumi” (or Gardens of Citrus), taking place this weekend from Saturday 22 to Tuesday, April 25.

Now in its third edition, the event organized by the Association of Social Promotion Terre & Sapori dell’Alto Garda will have as its main focus the splendid cloister of San Francesco, where a trade show will be held with the main varieties of citrus grown on high Garda and tools once used for citrus cultivation in the area. Some panels will illustrate the landscape and the constructive character of the typical lemon groves of Garda, monumental greenhouses built to defend the plants from the harsh winter that still are a recurring element in the architectural landscape of the Brescia Riviera del Garda. And the visitors, during the days of 22 and 23, will have the chance to visit the places where the citrus are cultivated following the historical paths of of via del Crocifisso and San Giacomo, where a dozen owners and private farmers have agreed to open their properties and make their sites visitable. Do not miss a market of typical and traditional products of the territory, reflecting the fact that the cultivation of citrus fruits, maybe not so important as in the past, is indeed experiencing a rebirth linked to the needs of the modern local gastronomy or to the production of liquors, jams and other goodies closely linked to the territory. The complete program is available on site, and also includes workshops, lectures and guided tours.
