Gardone Riviera, all the charm of history

The Grand Hotel Gardone overlooks the breathtaking lakeshore of Gardone Riviera, a place that definitely can be counted among the cultural and tourist capitals of Lake Garda, as well as a destination to visit to enjoy a priceless, history-charged atmosphere.

With roots that sink in ancient Roman times, the town still retains (in Gardone Sopra area) traces of a castle with a chapel dedicated to St. Michael (the archangel dear to Lombards), and went through the story developing his tourist vocation at the end of 1800, when the Austrian Luigi Wimmer opened a small hotel which subsequently grow bigger to become the actual Grand Hotel. In 1921, the great Italian poet Gabriele D'Annunzio chose Gardone to build the Vittoriale degli Italiani, which still remains one of the major cultural destinations of the Garda and the whole Italy and where a visit is an absolute must before leaving. The presence of the poet still hovers over all of Gardone, in a scenario that seems almost suspended outside of time dynamics: getting lost among the narrow streets and the gardens of the village is an unforgettable experience. Also worth seeing is the Hruska botanical garden, which dates back from the early '900, in addition to Torre San Marco, located in front of Villa Alba and next to the famous Villa Fiordaliso, where during the Republic of Salò lived Claretta Petacci, Benito Mussolini’s lover.
